Recently, I learned about a college student—a young man raised in the church, active in his college ministry, and by all accounts a "great guy"—who tragically took his own life just before Thanksgiving. His story is a sobering reminder that many college men are quietly struggling, even those who appear to have everything going for them. The young men most at risk for suicide often defy stereotypes; they’re the “nice guys” who are well-liked, ambitious, and involved. They excel academically, socially, and athletically, checking all the boxes for what we’d call success. Yet, beneath the surface, they may be battling invisible burdens.
College can amplify the pressures these young men face, and understanding the unique challenges they encounter is essential for helping them.
