The attached guide is a roadmap for young men in 6th grade and up who want to take their faith seriously. It's for guys who want to be more than just average—who want to become dangerous men.
The ideas in this guide are based on the book Disciplines of a Godly Man by R. Kent Hughes, a respected pastor and author. I've taken his big ideas and broken them down into a simple, 14-week plan that's easy to follow and done at home with fathers and their sons.
Each week, you'll tackle a new "discipline"—an area of life where you can train your heart to follow God more closely. For each week, there's a 5-Day Challenge (Sunday through Thursday) with a small, practical action step and a journal question for each day.
How to Use This Guide
Dads, it’s recommended that you do it with your son(s) or another trusted Christian man (like a grandfather or mentor) if you’re a single-mom. This journey is better with a guide who has gone before you. If you have more than one son in the age rage, you can do this a group. It doesn’t necessarily need to be one-on-one.
Here are a couple of ways you can do it together or have your sons do this on their own:
Weekly Check-in: Work through the 5-day challenges on your own from Sunday to Thursday. Then, schedule a time to meet up once a week—maybe for breakfast on Friday or lunch on Saturday—to talk about what you learned, where you struggled, and how you saw God work.
The 14-Week Review: Go through the entire 14-week plan on your own. Use a journal to keep track of your answers and what you’re learning. At the end of the 14 weeks, sit down with your dad or mentor for a longer conversation to share your journey and get his wisdom.
This is a training manual of sorts. It will be challenging, but the reward—a stronger faith and a more solid character—is worth it. I’d love any feedback in December if any of you use this guide.
